About North Star Counseling

Our Business

North Star Counseling a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Corporation (NSC) is a California corporation that was established by Mark B. McOmber in May 2005. Prior to that Mark had been doing business as North Star Counseling for 14 years in Fresno then in Clovis.  Several excellent and well-known therapists have been a part of our success story.

Our Staff

Mark B. McOmber, LCSW, is the founding director and is part-time working with adults in therapy and on Life Coaching.

Mark David McOmber, LCSW, Mark’s son, who also goes by his middle name or M. David McOmber to avoid confusion, is full-time in the clinic. You may also stipulate “Jr” or “Sr” when asking for them. Mark Jr. enjoys working with  individuals 15 years old and older and with couples.

Emilio Hernandez, LMFT is a part-time therapist. He offers counseling for children, teens, and adults in individual, couples, or family counseling in English or Spanish.

We have other part-time therapists, who come in as their schedules allow. Les Lucas, LMFT, has been with us the longest.

Cathy has been our office manager for over 15 years.  She does our billing and answers our phone while here or off site. She helps sort referrals and is fondly known as our “Therapists’ Therapist.”  You may reach her at (559) 297-6060 ext.1.  Cathy spends significant time on the phone with insurance companies, so you may need to leave her a detailed message on her voicemail.  She is prompt to return calls.

The therapists schedule their own appointments.

Our Model

NSC therapists work with clients in a holistic (whole person) model, paying attention to physical and spiritual issues, strengths, and needs as well as the expected psychosocial focus. We are not spiritual or biological healers, but we engage in open discussion of those dynamics. We will freely consult with spiritual or medical healers when clients desire and authorize that consultation.

The client is treated as a whole being from the perspective of their subjective world. Rather than expect that a person of Hispanic, or Native American descent, etc. will present with a predictable cultural perspective, we try to understand the client’s “World View” or view of self in the world and the culture of their background or family of origin. Of course we have acquired an understanding of and sensitivity to the various cultures.  We welcome all cultural, racial, religious, and sexual orientations.

We employ evidence-based and traditionally sound therapy models such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Adlerian Psychotherapy, Narrative Counseling, and Motivational Interviewing.

Our Location

We are located in our Downtown Clovis building on 624 Woodworth Ave. (93612) between Bullard Ave. And 7th St. Our building was built to our specifications in 2004 with the look and feel of a new home (with a parking lot out front). The building also has a comfortable, warm interior.  We have a backdoor exit for those who want to maintain more confidentiality. Welcome to our Home!
